alt.travel.uk.air - Flightguide FAQ.
This FAQ gives details of where to find accurate and current information about flights to and from the UK. The rapid increase in the number of flights in and out of the UK and the number of airlines using our airports means that the information is constantly changing. Daily, even hourly, flight information is available from a number of instantly accessible sources. Live Online Arrivals Information is available via the Flight Arrivals page. Airline telephone information lines and timetables:All airlines provide up-to-date timetable information by telephone. Some have freephone numbers. Most of the airlines also produce their own time-tables which are issued free. Freephone Telephone numbers:
Airport flight guides:BAA have now ceased to issue these guides as the information is available via their airports respective web site. That is what they claim but in practice it isn't, and these guides are greatly missed. Ceefax:Flight arrivals information for a number of BAA airports is available on BBC Ceefax pages 440 to 455. This is regularly updated with information from the BAA. Teletext:Flight arrivals information for a number of BAA airports is available on ITV Teletext pages 180 to 192. This is regularly updated with information from the BAA. Internet:Flight arrivals information is available via links on the flight arrivals page. This information is the same as that displayed on the information systems at the airports. In addition, Reed Publishing/OAG, publishers of a commercial flight guide which provides travel information including timetables www.oag.com Travel agents:To arrange flight bookings and travel details, most travel agents provide flight information over the telephone. For security, book with an ABTA agent or, if non-ABTA, ensure that you get the name and number of the ATOL operator the agent is booking with. You may well find the service you receive from an independent agent is better than that at a high street chain. The independents do tend to have more knowledge of, and better, consolidator fares. ABTA:ABTA is the trade association for UK tour operators and travel agents having a membership of over 3000. By checking that the company or agent you book with is an ABTA member you can be sure that among other things your money is safe and you will not be stranded abroad. They also run an arbitration service administered by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. ABTA only cover packages and don't have any power over flight bookings, however they would normally contact the agent if they thought they were wrong and advise them accordingly. They can also fine operators who do not reply to complaints with a specific time. Their web site enables you to check if a company is a member and gives details of how to make a complaint. It was surprising however to see that they allow travel agents to advertise on their site. General inquiries and complaints should be addressed to: 55-57, Newman Street LONDON W1P 4AH Tel; 020-7637 2444 They also have a web site on http://www.abtanet.com ATOL & CAA:General inquiries and complaints should be addressed to: CAA House 45-59, Kingsway LONDON WC2B 6TE Tel; 020-7379 7311.... Fax; 020-7240 1153 Remember that the above are Industry Regulators and you should also record your complaint with a copy of your documentation to your local Trading Standards Office. Complaints must be lodged with your airline or Tour Operator at the time of occurrence. Complaints and inquiries about British Airports are also dealt with by the CAA. But please remember their industry regulator status - they will quite often take the side of the industry member, before even listening to the consumer complaint! They also have a web site on http://www.atol.org.uk Documentation:Visas, passports, health and safety are important aspects of travel, especially for long-haul travellers who book at short notice. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office provides safety advice on the 24-hr recorded telephone number 0374-500 900. Feedback: I know that some airports in the Highlands and Islands have been left out. Please let me know the telephone numbers for inclusion in this FAQ next time round. In fact, if I have left any passenger airports out at all, please let me know. There are also, some telephone numbers missing.. I hope this time round all the phone numbers have been corrected, however if you know different please tell me, thanks.
